Nottingham Forest's major stadium expansion plans have been approved by Rushcliffe Borough Council. The £550m redevelopment of The City Ground will increase capacity from around 30,000 to 45,000 supporters.
Rushcliffe Borough Council said the approval was "subject to meeting the requirements in the application subject to section 106." The project, which will unfold over three years, is expected to generate £63.6m per year and create 910 full-time equivalent jobs on site.
The idea for expanding the stadium first emerged in 2019 but gained serious momentum following the club's promotion to the Premier League in May 2022. Initial permission to demolish the existing Peter Taylor Stand was granted in June 2025, before the club submitted a much larger plan last December.
The expansion will involve demolishing the Peter Taylor Stand and filling in the corners that separate it from the iconic Trent End and The Brian Clough Stand. The new Peter Taylor Stand will feature hospitality suites, media facilities and a restaurant. Several other buildings will also be demolished, including the existing club shop, the Champion Centre, two boathouses and six residential properties on Rosebery Avenue and Colwick Road.
Minor renovations have been a feature of Evangelos Marinakis's ownership, with safe standing added to parts of The Brian Clough Stand and a new TV screen installed at the Trent End before the 2024/25 season. The Trent End itself was the last major stand to be built, constructed between 1994 and 1996 for the Euro 96 tournament.
The news arrives as Forest sit 11th in the Premier League with five points from four games. Their recent form reads WDDLL, with the most recent result a 2-1 away win at Aston Villa last weekend. The squad's current status, including the absence of Nicolò Savona, is detailed on our injuries list. The team has scored 4 goals and conceded 5, with a goal difference of -1. They have accumulated 5 points from a possible 12, averaging 1.25 points per game. The team's next fixture is at home against West Ham United on Saturday, September 28th.
