Irish defender Andrew Omobamidele has joined Belgian Pro League side Anderlecht on a season-long loan from Strasbourg. The move, confirmed this week, sees the former Nottingham Forest player seek regular first-team football after falling out of favour in France.
The loan agreement does not include an option for Anderlecht to make the transfer permanent next summer. Omobamidele's switch was one of several late-window deals for the Brussels club, who also signed Moldovan international defender Oleg Reabcuik and central midfielder Romeo Amane.
Andrew Omobamidele began his professional career at Norwich City, rising through their academy to make his senior debut in the 2020/21 season. He went on to play 55 times for the Canaries, scoring two goals, before his departure in the summer of 2023. Nottingham Forest then brought the centre-back to the Premier League. His time at the City Ground was brief, making 15 appearances before he left during the 2024/25 campaign to sign for Ligue 1's Strasbourg.
He featured 41 times for Strasbourg last season but is not considered part of manager Hugo Oliveira's plans for the current campaign, prompting the loan move. Forest, meanwhile, are preparing for their next Premier League fixture, a home match against Tottenham on September 5th.
Anderlecht have strengthened their defensive options with the addition of Omobamidele. The 24-year-old provides cover and competition at centre-back as the club competes domestically and in Europe. His experience in English and French top-flight football is viewed as a valuable asset for the Belgian side's squad depth.
His arrival follows the signings of Reabcuik and Amane, indicating a focused effort to bolster the team's spine in the final days of the transfer window. The club will hope Omobamidele can quickly adapt and challenge for a starting role.
While focusing on a former player's move, Nottingham Forest's own season is underway. Steve Cooper's side currently sit 15th in the Premier League table with one point from their opening two matches, following a draw and a loss. Their form reads DL, and they have scored two goals while conceding three, giving them a minus-one goal difference.
This leaves them five points behind early leaders Manchester City. The team is also dealing with absences, as midfielder Ibrahim Sangaré and winger Nicolò Savona are currently sidelined. Fans can check the latest availability updates on our injuries page and view the full league standings.
The immediate focus for Forest is that home game against Tottenham, who currently sit 20th, this coming Saturday. Andrew Omobamidele's loan deal with Anderlecht is set to run until the end of the 2026/27 season.
