Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has overseen the dismissal of his 25th manager in 16 years across his footballing portfolio. The latest departure is Jose Luis Mendilibar, who has left his role as boss of Greek side Olympiacos, another club under Marinakis's control, after just seven games of the new campaign.

This news shows the intense pressure and short-term expectations that define the Greek shipping magnate's approach to club management. Mendilibar, 65, had delivered significant success, guiding Olympiacos to a historic UEFA Conference League triumph in 2024 and following it with a domestic treble. However, failure to qualify for the Champions League this season and a stuttering start proved decisive.

The managerial churn at Olympiacos inevitably draws parallels with the recent instability at Nottingham Forest. Marinakis's tenure at the City Ground has been marked by frequent changes in the dugout. Last season alone saw Nuno Espirito Santo axed early, Ange Postecoglou dismissed after eight winless games, and Sean Dyche lasting 25 matches before Vitor Pereira took over to secure Premier League survival. Oliver Glasner is the latest to take charge, having joined from Crystal Palace.

Forest's current Premier League standing provides the immediate context for this pressure. As of 10 September 2026, the club sits 16th with just two points from three games, having recorded zero wins, two draws and one loss. Their goal difference stands at -1, having scored twice and conceded three.

Results on the pitch have been mixed. The team opened with a 1-0 home defeat to Leeds United on 22 August. They then faced the same opponents in the League Cup three days later, losing 2-0. A 2-2 draw with Liverpool on 29 August showed resilience, followed by a goalless draw against Tottenham Hotspur on 5 September. This form leaves them seven points adrift of early leaders Manchester City.

Olympiacos released a statement paying tribute to the departing coach's achievements. "But in football, as in life, there are cycles that eventually close," the club said. "But what resonates in eternity is what you have achieved." It added, "The appreciation, respect and love of the OLYMPIC family will accompany you forever, General, along with the strong emotions that united us and are eternal." With Mendilibar gone, Olympiacos now drop into the Europa League, where they will begin their campaign against a Polish side.

Attention now turns to Oliver Glasner's task of building consistency. The immediate focus for fans will be the next fixture, a Premier League clash at home against Fulham scheduled for 2 January 2027. Fulham currently sit 19th, making it a significant early-season encounter at the City Ground. The full schedule of upcoming matches is available on our fixtures page.
