Nottingham Forest were denied a late equaliser against Coventry City after a VAR review ruled out an Igor Jesus goal. The 88th-minute strike was chalked off for a foul on Coventry's Caleb Yirenkyi, leaving the Reds with a 1-0 defeat at the City Ground on Saturday.
Referee Jare Gillett was sent to the pitchside monitor to review the incident. He announced his final decision to the crowd, stating, "After review, Nottingham Forest No.11 steps on the foot of Coventry No.8 and trips him. The final decision is direct free-kick." The VAR official had advised that Jesus clearly stood on Yirenkyi's foot, preventing him from playing the ball normally.
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher supported the call. "It is absolutely what VAR is there for," he said on Sky Sports. Former Cardiff forward Jay Bothroyd and pundit Gary Neville also agreed it was a foul.
The decision confirmed a frustrating afternoon for Forest, who remain without a home win this season. Jay Dasilva's 55th-minute goal, assisted by Carl Rushworth, proved decisive for the visitors. The result leaves Nuno Espírito Santo's side 13th in the Premier League with five points from their opening five games.
Injuries continue to be a factor, with Nicolò Savona and Nikola Milenković currently sidelined. The team must now regroup ahead of their next league fixture, a trip to face 15th-placed Crystal Palace on 11 October. Check the full schedule on our fixtures page.
