Nottingham Forest were controversially denied a Premier League victory over Tottenham after a VAR handball decision chalked off a late goal. The incident at the City Ground on Saturday left Forest with a 0-0 draw, a result that sees them sit 16th in the Premier League with 2 points from three games.
Referee Craig Pawson initially awarded the goal when Neco Williams forced the ball over the line after Morgan Gibbs-White's chipped effort. VAR official Peter Bankes then advised a review for a potential handball by Williams. After checking the footage, Bankes ruled the Forest defender had made contact with the ball using his arm immediately before it crossed the line. Pawson subsequently overturned his decision, awarding a direct free-kick to Tottenham and announcing over the stadium system that the ball had touched the hand of Nottingham Forest's number three.
Neco Williams strongly disagreed with the decision in post-match comments to Sky Sports. "It's a goal," Williams stated. "VAR is there for when there's a clear and obvious error, and for me, that's not clear and obvious." He argued the ball struck his head between his arms and that pausing the video created a misleading impression.
Manager Oliver Glasner echoed his player's frustration, accusing the VAR of operating on a guess. "I think the VAR can't intervene when he is guessing," Glasner said. "It was not clear and obvious." The Austrian boss referenced a pre-season directive for a higher threshold for VAR interventions, stating he had watched multiple angles and could not definitively see the ball touch Williams's arm rather than a Tottenham player on the line.
The disallowed goal cost Forest two important points, leaving them with a record of zero wins, two draws, and one loss. Their recent form reads DDL, and they have scored just two goals while conceding three this season. The single point keeps them seven points adrift of early leaders Manchester City in the title race. The squad is also currently without midfielder Nicolò Savona, who is sidelined.
Attention now turns to the next challenge, an away trip to face Aston Villa on September 12th. Villa currently sit 17th in the table, making it a significant early-season encounter for both sides. Fans can view the full schedule on the club's fixtures page. Forest will be looking to convert their strong defensive performance against Spurs into a first win of the campaign at Villa Park.
