Nottingham Forest made an enquiry for French youth international Valentin Atangana last summer as they assessed midfield options. The 21-year-old, who currently plays for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, is understood to be keen on a return to European football.

Atangana described the Saudi Pro League as a good “trampoline” to play for some of Europe’s biggest clubs. His stated ambition is to represent France's senior national team and compete in the UEFA Champions League.

Forest's interest came during a summer where they added five new players, including free agent Xaver Schlager, while also selling Elliot Anderson for a major fee. The club's current midfield options have been evaluated following James McAtee's performances in a deeper role.

The side currently sits 13th in the Premier League with five points from five games, their form reading one win, two draws and two defeats. They were beaten 1-0 by Coventry City at the City Ground in their last outing.

Forest's next test is an away trip to face Crystal Palace on 11 October, a match that will provide further insight into their squad needs.
